Happening Now At the Eden Woolley House - Presidents at the Monmouth County Shore

One hundred years ago this September, 25,000 people gathered on the grounds of what is today Monmouth University—then a private estate called Shadow Lawn—to see Woodrow Wilson officially accept the nomination of the Democratic Party for a second Presidential run. Wilson was following a popular tradition among American Presidents to retreat to our slice of the Jersey Shore to escape the heat and hubbub of Washington. Our exhibit tells the wide-ranging stories of eleven Presidents who spent time here, at the Monmouth County shore. More.

Morris County - Mendham - Searching for Yankee Doodle -Washington's Soldiers in the American Revolution

by Township of Ocean Historical Museum on 03/19/17

Tuesday, March 28 - Morris County
The Mendham Borough Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Garabrant Center, 4 Wilson Street, Mendham Borough.  At 7:45 p.m., Robert Mayers will present "Searching for Yankee Doodle -Washington's Soldiers in the American Revolution."
He explores the history of common soldiers, the embodiment of the American Revolution-what inspired them to endure the hardships, why they fought. It was a challenge for historians to expose the attitudes, behaviors and golden myths about these patriots. Were they a reality, wishful thinking, or both.  Mayers evaluates diverse conceptions, Yankee Doodles' lives before, during, after the war as evidenced in original military records and personal papers.
Descendent of a patriot soldier, author, and Revolutionary War historian, Mayers' travels, research and family accounts shed light on people and places lost or neglected by history. He is a frequent presenter at and contributor to numerous historical societies, Navy/Marine vet, associated with Rutgers and Seton Hall.  Public invited; parking/program free.
